Variations and Permutations in the 9th Dobra International Experimental Film Festival, Brazil, 2023
Variations and Permutations, featuring dance by Jocelyn Todd and music by Jesse Stewart, will be presented in the ninth edition of Brazil’s DOBRA International Experimental Film Festival, in both Rio de Janeiro and Saõ Paulo. On September 29, 2023 it will be screened at the Cinematheque of the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, and on October 4, 2023 at the São Paulo Cultural Center, in a program entitled “Dramaturgies of dancing bodies” curated by Cristiana Miranda and Lucas Murari:
“Cinema is an art of the body, living matter that passes through lenses and machines, and is projected in small particles carried by light. Experimental cinema has always claimed a living body, which experiences the image without hierarchy between it and what surrounds it, the public and the author. A body that reveals secrets and memories, takes on your sorrows and desires. The program “Dramaturgies of dancing bodies” brings together a group of films that trace paths that go from Brazil to Ukraine, through Canada, France and Germany, united by the experience of a time where the artist’s body goes through loneliness and war, the uncomfortable memory of a century that begins announcing the end of times. Cinema of a dancing body, these films affirm themselves as powers of life and criticism, affection and contagion of the drive to live.”
